Data Scientist Faculty of Science & Engineering Perth, Western Australia Contract Full Time 27/07/2026 2 x two-year fixed term, full-time positions available Competitive remuneration + 17% super contributions Australian citizenship required Job Reference Number: 1644814 About the Roles: Working closely with Curtin researchers and collaborators from the Department of Defence, you will use advanced statistical techniques to assess system performance, capability and reliability, delivering insights that inform research outcomes and operational decision-making. In this collaborative role, you will develop statistical models and data-driven solutions using tools such as R and Python, transform complex datasets into meaningful insights, and communicate findings to technical and non-technical audiences. Working across research, industry and government projects, you will contribute to nationally significant defence-related initiatives while supporting innovation, best-practice data management and a positive team culture. Your responsibilities will include: Data analysis, statistical modelling, and algorithm development to support work with the Department of Defence. Develop code in R and Python. Provide statistical, mathematical, and optimisation expertise for projects with other industry and government partners as required. Write reports and presentations for stakeholders at Curtin University and partner organisations. Secure and maintain an Australian government security clearance (NV1 or higher). Contribute to group activities and a positive team culture in the Centre for Optimisation and Decision Science. Who we are looking for (Selection Criteria): Essential: A tertiary qualification in statistics, mathematics, computer science or related discipline with considerable relevant experience or an equivalent combination of relevant experience and/or education. Proficiency in data science and statistics. Proficiency in R and Python. Analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to understand and effectively tackle challenging problems using quantitative methods. Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team. Ability to articulate complex, technical concepts to non-technical clients and the ability to consult and liaise with personnel across all levels and disciplines. Excellent written communication skills with the ability to construct clear and concise reports and correspondence. Desirable: Proficiency in mathematical modelling and/or optimisation techniques. Postgraduate or PhD qualifications. Experience working with industry and/or government on applied projects involving data science. Role Requirements: These roles will involve part-time work at HMAS Stirling on Garden Island and other defence facilities. Australian citizenship is required along with an Australian government security clearance (NV1 or higher). These roles require approval to access the United States’ International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR) data and equipment. The successful candidates will be required to undertake work on and be provided with technical information pertaining to Defence articles of United States of America (US) origin. In accordance with the US ITAR, any applicant who holds, or has previously held, citizenship or permanent residency of a country other than Australia will be required to declare and indicate the country or countries of citizenship or permanent residency. Restrictions on access to Defence articles and associated technical data subject to the ITAR by dual national employees may apply. Successful applicants are subject to a National Police Clearance, and background, integrity, and reference checks to Curtin’s satisfaction.
